Veronica Koperski's addition to the much-lauded What Are They Saying About (WATSA) series presents an overview of recent scholarly debate about Paul and the Law with attention to its historical roots. The difficulty and variety of thought on the issue of Paul and the Law is aptly noted by Rosner in the introductory chapter of this book.

There is no shortage of positions on the matter, but three are chosen by Rosner as representative in his opinion of /5. Paul stated the Law acted as a “tutor” or “schoolmaster” παιδαγωγός (a guardian hired to train boys in right and wrong) to lead us to Christ.

This complaint, however, could never be made against Brian Rosner and his new book on Paul and the Law. The book is in part a What Are They Saying About Paul and the Law?

book to my lament that his previous work did not explicate the various ways Paul viewed the Mosaic law and the Mosaic covenant. Rosner has responded to this complaint with gusto.

Paul, in no uncertain terms, tells us what he thinks of the law. He states, "Therefore, the law is indeed holy, and the commandment holy and righteous and good " (Romans ).

The idea that believers who have faith abolish or no longer need God's law was a foreign concept to the apostle Paul.

Often a particular regulation is introduced especially in Leviticus and sometimes in Numbers, with the words, “this is the law.” The law often is associated with a book. In most instances what is written or found in the book are the regulations of the law.

In verses Paul pronounces a curse on anyone who dared teach a message other than what Christ taught. In repeating this curse for emphasis, Paul sternly warned against changes to Christ’s teaching. Since Paul used such strong language, we would expect his teaching on law and grace to be the same as Christ’s, and this is what the Bible.

In short, Christians are instructed by the law, but not as Jewish law. Instead, Paul models reading the Law of Moses as prophecy and as wisdom." (pp. bold emphasis mine) Paul consistently repeats these three attitudes or "moves" towards the Law of Moses and they are covered in detail in Rosner's book.

P aul's letter to the Galatians is the Scripture most often used to try and prove that YHVH's Law has been done away. Many theologians cite passages from Galatians to establish that the so-called "Mosaic Law" (i.e., Torah) given at Mount Sinai has no validity for "new covenant" believers.

But is this position correct. It would only make sense that when the Lord says to Joshua “This book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth” (Josh ), Joshua would be in the presence of the “book of the Law” referenced by “this”.

And the place for that book of the Law was by the side of ark of the covenant. Question: "Was the Apostle Paul actually a false prophet?" Answer: The theory that the apostle Paul was a false prophet and not a true follower of Christ is usually put forth by those of the Hebrew roots movement persuasion, among others.

Paul is now ready to knock the props right out from under these religious Jews. These people had God’s law and they heard God’s law but they did not DO God’s law (verse 13) and thus they will be judged by God’s law (verse 12). Instead of being law-keepers they were law-breakers (ver25).

The Law of Moses and the Law of the Lord were the same thing and still are. When writing to the brethren in Rome, the apostle Paul quoted from the Ten Commandments and taught that it was part of the old law to which they had “become dead through the body of Christ” (Romans ,7).

In his second epistle to the Corinthians, Paul wrote. Trying to understand Paul’s teaching on law and grace by starting with the book of Galatians is a little like trying to grasp the plot of a complex movie by starting to watch it in the final half hour.

The reader of Galatians first needs to know the background—the unusual circumstances that caused Paul to write this epistle (letter) to several congregations in the region of Asia.

When Paul speaks of being "under the law" or the "works of the law", he is speaking against legalism, and not against the Torah. There is no Hebrew word for the concept of "legalism" or "legalist" so Paul was hindered in his attempt to explain to the Gentiles that legalism was not what God intended.

When I say that an unregenerate Paul would not say, “I delight in the law of God, in my inner being” (Romans ), I don’t mean that a first-century Jew couldn’t say that.

I mean that the term “inner being” (esō anthrōpon) is Paul’s way of saying, “I .Though the law was good and holy and just it was a spiritual law while they were carnal, sold under sin. When Paul therefore says “but I am carnal, sold under sin” he is using himself and present tense figuratively, putting himself into the place of those who lived in the age of the law, exactly as he did in verse 7 with those who lived.
